Almost a hundred years ago, the Extension Department at St. Francis Xavier University sent people into kitchens and church basements across eastern Nova Scotia with a simple argument: you have more capacity than you think, and you can pool it. Out of that came the credit union systems of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
This August I'm riding through that country. Roughly 700 miles in eleven days, from Halifax to St. John's, Newfoundland. Self-supported and camping every night. It's my third trip of this kind; last year I tackled Lake Michigan, and the year before that the West Coast. This year, I'm excited to discover the landscapes of Eastern Canada and the birthplace of the credit union movement in English-speaking Canada.
The Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions is the charitable arm of the World Council of Credit Unions, a separate 501(c)(3) working to expand financial inclusion through a growing global credit union system. Its programs support women's leadership, young credit union professionals, disaster relief for credit unions in crisis, and professional development for leaders across dozens of countries.
My goal is $25,000. That's what we raised last year, and it's what I believe we can raise again this year. New challenge, new country, same goal. Join me on this journey and help make a difference!
